Only when you go closer will you realize that it is not so. Refers to the way we tend to look at other people's lives and other things that we don't have in general through rose colored glasses. It means the situation of other people always appears better and we live in a world surrounded by ordinary people who look at the world subjectively. It usually means that i've said something stupid and now i'm sleeping on the couch for the next two weeks.
